There are absolutely loads of ways you can save on your food shopping bill. But one of the biggest things you have to get through your head is that the supermarkets want your money.

They will do everything they can to get you through their doors and then they will use every dirty trick in the marketing and sales book to get you to spend more.

But before you get to the store be certain to prepare a list of what you need. The biggest mistake anyone makes when they go food shopping is not having a list prepared. If you don't have a list you will just be wandering up and down the aisles trying to locate what you want. You will become more stressed and tired and you will make the most horrendous impulses purchases imaginable.

And also because you have put yourself at the store designer's mercy.

Modern supermarkets are not laid out in any old fashion placing items wherever the managers feel fit. Years of consumer behavior research have led marketing professionals to lay them out in a particular order that will maximize the amount of time you spend in the store and the amount of money you part with.

For one thing brand items are placed at eye level. Think about how high the shelves are in your average supermarket and then think about where you tend to look during your shopping trip. The store is tricking you into buying pricier items. How often do you look up at the top of the shelves? Probably slightly more than you crouch down and look at the bottom of them, that's how often.

Resist the temptation to just grab the first thing you see and instead take a second to look up and down. There is very often little to distinguish different makers of the same foods in terms of quality. But there is often a huge difference in what you pay for the brand image.

Whenever possible shop without your kids. The little ones are notoriously difficult to control in the colorful exciting new environment of the supermarket. And they will only push you into buying more unnecessary stuff.

A lot of stores have you enter in the middle. A lot of people then just dive head long into the aisles and get lost. What happens then? Well, while the trolley is empty they get dazzled by all the junk food packet etc and fill up. You should avoid doing this and go to the edges of the store first. This is where the necessities are like the vegetables, meat and bread. Get these essential items into your basket first and when you do venture into the aisles you won't have an empty space staring up at you asking to be filled.

This will give you some idea of how to save money on food. There are savings to be made in absolutely any commercial transaction you make. The secret is knowing how you are being manipulated by others into spending more.

When you learn the tips and tricks that the other side are using you can turn it against them and make informed rational choices. This translates into a more satisfying life with more dollars in your pocket. And these little things teach you how to save money for retirement.
